Artist Statement
I do not make art for the sake of creating art. The experiences I encounter in my life often influence the narratives of my work. I am compelled to explore the human condition and sort out what makes us fragile and what gives us strength by primarily using clay; a strong, yet fragile material. The process of working through the creation of a figure is a journey within itself and further satisfies my need to look deep within the core of things to create solidarity. I start by constructing the figure in its entirety, then, I cut sections of the body off to carve out the excess clay and reconstruct the figure together again. I am fascinated by the surrealism movement and the process of using creative intuition to depict dream-like narratives about the human psyche. I use the figure to present these sublime and, at times, absurd qualities of human behavior and social conditions.
